I am very enthusiastic about sharing my love of drawing on location with others! I have many years of experience as a professional illustrator, although I do not have any formal teaching qualifications,   If you work for a company or organisation planning an event and would like to find out more about offering a workshop to your clients or colleagues, please get in touch.

I am building up a series of workshops to offer and can always create bespoke ones to fit your particular needs and timings. I also work with Portuguese architect Nuno Pais, creating sketch walks in London, both with or without tuition. If you have any questions, please send a message by email or fill in the contact form and I’ll aim to get back to you within 48 hours. Thank you!

Upcoming workshops

Urban Sketchers Liverpool 10 Year Anniversary Weekend - September 2024 - Full details to be announced

PAST EVENTS

Compostela Ilustrada is a drawing festival held annually in November in Santiago de Compostela. The city is famous as being the final destination on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. I gave two workshops in Parque Alameda, gave a talk at Auditorio de Galaicia and made a drawing which will be used in next year’s calendar.

BCN 10 - Celebrating 10 years since the 2013 Urban Sketchers Symposium in Barcelona / June 2023

I gave two workshops, in two different venues, as part of the celebrations and also gave a short presentation about my work at the Design Museum of Barcelona.

London Festival of Architecture / June 2023

Architect Nuno Pais and I organised and delivered a ‘time travelling’ sketchwalk, looking at different types of apartment buildings in the city, spanning a hundred year period.

Urban Sketchers London 10th Anniversary Celebrations / July 2022

‘Near and far’ was the topic for the workshop that I gave at the Anniversary celebrations. I shared simple ways to add depth and distance to your urban sketches without the use of formal perspective.

Dulwich Festival Sketchwalk / May 2022

A route taking in local architecture, park views and a busy market gave the participants a chance to sketch a variety of subject matter. This proved a popular festival event with over fifty people signing up. We were contacted by the Oru Space to organise the event as part of a week of activities.

Myself and Nuno would be happy to organise more events like this in the future, so please get in touch if you would like more information!

Online class as part of the ‘Alfabeto Lisboeta’ course / May 2022

In this class, the participants used coloured pencils to create colourful sketches of vegetables and make a recipe spread in their sketchbooks. I demonstrated coloured pencil techniques and showed examples of work from British Illustrator Glynn Boyd Harte, who was greatly skilled in using them in his work.

The ‘Alfabeto Lisboeta’ course is run annually by Jose Louro, Mario Linhares and Ketta Linhares from Lisbon.

Visiting Lecturer at the London Metropolitan University 2019 -2022

Giving students an opportunity to try out drawing on location, develop their sketching skills and give them more confidence in their freehand drawing ability is the aim of the workshops I have given for the Interior Design faculty. Students experienced working on location at the busy Spitalfields Market and both inside and outside at The Loom, a converted warehouse in East London.

Artists and Illustrators Magazine / June 2022

Step-by-step instructions on how to create an urban sketch in my style, including the materials I use. I have a blog post here with all the information too.

Drawing workshops at USk Week in Intragna, Switzerland 2021

I was invited to give two different workshops during the USk Week, one entitled ‘Rough and smooth,’ the second entitled ‘Near and Far.’ The workshops were designed around the particular location, high on a mountainside in the Italian part of the country. The aim was to get the participants to be experimental with the materials that I supplied and discover new ways to capture this type of landscape in their sketchbooks.

Swiss Urban Sketchers Symposium 2020 in Zuoz, Switzerland

I gave workshops entitled ’Big shapes, line detail’ at the symposium, which was based in a small village in the Swiss Alps.

Talk to the Society of Graphic Fine Artists (SGFA) AGM 2020

I spoke about the initial beginnings of the Urban Sketchers movement, founded by Gabi Campanario and showed a slide show of work from a selection of the international community.

Winsor and Newton Video

My hands feature in a promotional video for the Winsor and Newton Cotman Watercolour Brush Set. I spent a day in front of the cameras and my hands were made up and manicured for the occasion! This is the link to the full video on YouTube.

Sketch Tour Portugal

I visited Lisbon in the summer of 2017 at the invitation of Turismo du Portugal and Urban Sketchers to draw for a week as part of a project entitled ’Sketch Tour Portugal.’ Images created were used online and in print to encourage tourists to visit the country. This is link to a short film of me sketching in the city.

On location watercolour demonstration in Lisbon, Portugal

Whilst in Lisbon, I met up with the local Urban Sketchers chapter and gave a demonstration of how I work. I explained that I tend to put down big shapes of watercolour first, then add more detail. Everyone in the group then had a go at drawing at the riverside location in that particular way.

Organiser for the Urban Sketchers London chapter 2016 -2020

I was joint organiser of the regular monthly sketchcrawls for over four years. This involved researching locations, writing blog posts, creating Google maps, answering email inquiries and leading some events.
